A traditional Yanomami communal dwelling in Brazil, possibly belonging to a community living in voluntary isolation.The Yanomami are one of South America's best-known Indigenous peoples. They live in the Amazon rainforest, along the border between northern Brazil and southern Venezuela. Their lives and traditions are closely connected to the forest, its rivers, and the land they have inhabited for generations.One of the most interesting things about their culture is the shabono, a traditional communal dwelling. It is a large circular or polygonal structure with a roof around an open central plaza. Several families live under the same roof, each with their own hearth and hammock area.The open space in the middle is where people gather for ceremonies, dances, feasts, and other community activities. The shabono is built from local wood, vines, and palm leaves. It may be rebuilt or relocated as the materials wear out, gardens change, or resources become harder to find.Traditionally, the Yanomami grow crops such as cassava, bananas, and plantains. They also hunt, fish, and gather food from the forest. Their knowledge of rainforest plants helps them find food, make tools, build homes, and prepare traditional medicines.Although the Yanomami have a long history of contact with outsiders, not all communities have the same relationship with the outside world. Some remain isolated or have very limited contact, often choosing to avoid outsiders because of the risks of disease and violence.Today, the Yanomami face serious challenges, including illegal gold mining, deforestation, mercury pollution, and threats to their ancestral lands. Despite these pressures, their culture and traditional knowledge continue to survive.The Yanomami remind us that the Amazon is more than a vast rainforest. Russia is expanding Rosatom’s Alabuga-Volokno factory in Tatarstan to increase military-grade aerospace carbon fiber production by 500 tons annually by 2029, according to plans obtained by POLITICO. Weapons expert David Albright estimates the additional capacity could supply carbon fiber for 28,000 more Shahed-136-type drone airframes each year, a 78% increase.
